LCpl. Jonathan R. Flores United States Marine Corps KIA 15 June 2005, Iraq
|
When Jonathan Flores was 17, he was insistent about joining the Marines. He couldn't join without
his parents' permission until he turned 18, but he was so adamant, they signed. "We didn't want
him over there because of the dangers," said his mother, Delia. "But, as a parent, you do what is
best for your children." Flores, 18, of San Antonio, was killed June 15 when a roadside bomb
exploded near his vehicle in Ramadi. He was based at Camp Pendleton. Flores was in the Junior
ROTC program in high school, where retired Air Force Col. Dennis LeVan remembered him as
polite, upbeat and focused on what he wanted to do with his life. The day before he died, he called
to tell his family that after his tour in Iraq was over, he would volunteer for another. He was
supposed to call back so he and his mother could discuss his plans, but he never got the chance.
He is also survived by his father and fiancee.
